So You Want To Go To College.

Over ninety percent of the students I talk to say they want to go to a four-year college.  While this is commendable I am surprised at the number of students that do not realize the commitment it takes to get there.

So for everyone’s benefit I have outlined below what it takes to go to college.

1st is to take rigorous classes all the way through your senior year.  You need to take the tough classes that will prepare you for college.  Don’t plan to relax academically during your senior year.

So, what does this mean?  It’s real simple; it means that you’re not going to be taking teacher aide, open hours, PE, or shop classes.  It means that you’re taking high level math, science, and English classes instead.

Obviously getting good grades are a priority but the key as I mentioned above is taking rigorous classes.  Anyone can pull a 4.0 GPA by taking the easy classes.  The colleges know this so they look more at what rigorous classes you have taken.  A “B+” in Physics means more to a college than an “A” in an Agriculture or PE class.

2nd is to prepare for your ACT and SAT tests.  Test preparation is important.  Knowing how to study for these tests will make or break you.  Knowing what will be asked also makes all the difference in the world.  Each one of these testing companies offer free questions and tests that you can practice on.

3rd is to get involved in community activities.  Give of yourself through volunteer work.  Colleges now want to see students that are involved in the community and society as a whole.

Sounds simple, right?

Now for the hard part.  Make the commitment to accomplish this.  If you need help stop by the Counseling Center.  Help is available there.
